John J. Salka, Jr., Battalion Chief, FDNY, is a 27-year veteran of the FDNY and currently working in the Bronx. He has been an officer for 20 plus years and a chief for the past 10. He has worked in engines and trucks as well as Rescue 3 and Squad 1. Salka has instructed at the FDNY academy in numerous capacities. He is a contributing editor for Firehouse Magazine and also writes for WNYF. He is the author of several books including First In, Last Out - Leadership Lessons From the New York Fire Department and he lectures and trains throughout North America.
